When Ramadan ended last year, my father gave me a Ramadan greeting in Arabic. Unable to speak the language, I responded with, “You, too."

"Say it in Arabic," he said.

"I can’t, dad. You never taught us to speak Arabic."

"Nobody seemed interested."
